Furnace blowing cold air? Check these three things first
Three checks that take two minutes and solve this more often than anything a technician does. None of them cost anything.

A furnace blowing cold air is the most common winter call we take, and a decent share of them are solved before anyone opens a toolbox. Try these three first.
1. The thermostat fan is set to ON instead of AUTO
On ON, the blower runs constantly whether the burners are lit or not. Between heating cycles that is room temperature air moving over your skin, which feels cold. Set the fan to AUTO and see whether the problem disappears.
2. The filter is blocked
A filter that has not been changed in a year restricts airflow enough that the furnace overheats and shuts the burners off on the high limit. The blower keeps running to cool the heat exchanger, so cold air comes out of the vents. Pull the filter out. If you cannot see light through it, that is your answer.
3. The blower door switch is not pressed in
This one catches more people than the other two put together. The blower compartment door has a plunger switch that has to be fully depressed for the furnace to fire at all. If somebody changed a filter and did not seat the door properly, the furnace will not light. Push the door firmly until it clicks.
If all three are fine
Then it is a real fault, and the usual suspects are a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, or a pressure switch that is not closing. Those are quick jobs for somebody with the right meter and the part on the truck, and they are not jobs to attempt yourself on a gas appliance.
One thing that is not a wait-and-see
If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company from outside. Not us, not later. That is the one symptom on this page that is not a heating problem.

Why does the fan keep running after the heat stops?
That is normal. The blower runs on for a minute or two to pull the remaining heat out of the heat exchanger. If it never stops at all, check whether the thermostat fan is set to ON rather than AUTO.
Can a dirty filter really stop a furnace?
Yes. Restricted airflow makes the heat exchanger overheat, and the high limit switch shuts the burners down to protect it. It is doing its job. A five dollar filter prevents it.
